AI slop

Slop is the average of the training set in a tuxedo. It is not ugly in the old sense. It is frictionless, symmetrical, and empty. An AI Creative Director’s first public skill is pointing at it without using the word “vibe.”

Tells in image

You already know them if you have watched a model for a week.

  • Cinematic, 8k, volumetric god-rays, award-winning.
  • Porcelain skin, artstation look, marble, fairy lights.
  • Drone plus golden hour plus “epic.”
  • Every hotel with an infinity pool and a flute.

Tells in software

Sidebar, onboarding, Inter, violet accent, “Welcome to your dashboard,” a dark-mode toggle, auth nobody asked for, an AI chatbot as a feature. That is slop with state. Users have to live in it. The cost is not aesthetic.

How you kill it

Name it in the negative. Put the cluster in the brief as the enemy. In dailies, pass one is death of tells — no debate. If you negotiate with a lens flare, you have already lost the hour you wrote.

Is all AI output slop?

No. Slop is undirected output, or directed output that ignored the negative. Directed work can still be wrong. It is wrong in a specific way. Slop is wrong in the average way.
