Role summary
The AI Creative Director is the human judgment layer on a generative pipeline. They turn business intent into a brief a model can be aimed at, keep brand and world consistent at volume, and decide what is allowed to ship. They do not exist to “add AI.” They exist so AI does not become the author of record.
Core responsibilities
- Translate a client or product ask into a seven-field brief and a world bible.
- Direct image, video, copy, and (where relevant) coding agents to that bible.
- Plan coverage: more than one take, more than one distance, then an edit.
- Run review (dailies). Kill slop and off-brief beauty without apology.
- Encode taste: prompt libraries as standards, not as tricks; reusable negatives; cut criteria.
- Mentor operators and prompt-fluent designers so the org is not a single-person bottleneck.
- Own disclosure, likeness, and brand-risk calls the model cannot make.
- Report what the pipeline should stop producing, not only what it can.
Skills
- Taste that can be spoken. “Cinematic” is not a note.
- Brief writing and reference literacy (function, not moodboard).
- Continuity across generations and across mediums.
- Working fluency with current generators — not fandom of one.
- Enough systems sense to freeze a stack and a token set in software work.
- Stakeholder language: can defend a cut to a CMO and to an engineer.
Salary (public 2026 ranges)
Treat as orientation. ZipRecruiter listed a U.S. average of about $120,057 for Generative AI Creative Director (26 August 2026). Wellfound listed ~$146,000 for Creative Directors in AI startups (range much wider). Robert Half’s broader Creative Director band sat roughly $128,000–$171,000. AI Art Director templates quoted $145,000–$185,000 base plus learning budgets. Principal-level (Amazon-shaped) will sit above those medians.
Who they report to
Usually Head of Creative, CCO, or in product orgs a design/product VP. If they report into “AI ops” with no creative authority, you hired an operator and called them a director.
