Score the office, not the grid

How to hire an AI Creative Director

If the scorecard is “great Midjourney” you will hire an operator and call them a director. Hire for the office: a brief they wrote, a bible they paste, a cut they can defend, a log of what they killed.

Ask for a directed assignment

One job, not a grid. Brief, negative, three survivors, deaths. Image or code. If they cannot show the kill, they cannot do the job on your brand, where most of the work is saying no.

Live exercise

Give them a rotten brief: “cinematic premium app.” Watch whether they generate or rewrite. The ones you want get irritated by the adjectives and ask for a person.

Reporting line

They report to creative or product leadership with authority to stop a pipeline. Buried under “AI ops” they will be asked for volume. Volume is the opposite of the hire.

Red flags

  • Portfolio is only stills, no brief.
  • They talk tools for twenty minutes before a person.
  • They will not kill a pretty off-brand frame in the interview.
  • They think disclosure is optional.

FAQ

Do we hire a CD and upskill, or hire AI-native?

A CD who can learn the bible-and-paste habit will beat an operator who cannot write a brief. The expensive mistake is believing the adjective “AI” is the skill.
